Playing on the same team as super recruits Jelani Jenkins and Caleb Porzel it could be hard to find your own spotlight but that is exactly what 2010 recruit EJ Scott has done. Scott, a 5’10” 170 lb. WR/DB/KR from our Lady of Good Counsel, knew there will be many college coaches focused on the private school in Olney, MD.
After having success on the combine circuit this past spring/summer, EJ
has continued that success on the field and has emerged from his
teammate’s shadows seeing his own stock skyrocket.
Last month, with Notre Dame Quarterbacks Coach Ron Powlus in attendance
watching prospect Jelani Jenkins, EJ made the most of the situation
gaining 133 receiving yards and 3 TDs. Then, earlier this
month, with a national TV audience and many college coaches in
attendance EJ had another great game including a sensational diving
catch. But even though he was excited to play well it was
more important to him that his team beat their rival Dematha Catholic.
“We want the WCAC Championship this year; we have been coming
up short the last few years,” said Scott.
“Playing on ESPN was great. We had a great
atmosphere, the fans were going crazy, it was a great experience, but
the most important thing was we won and we beat them
(Dematha).” Last year Good Counsel beat Dematha in the
regular season only to lose to their rival in the WCAC Championship
game. “We want to win this year for the
seniors.”
Two of those seniors, Jenkins and Porzel, have been great mentors for
Scott as he is beginning the busy recruiting process.
“Seeing how Jelani and Caleb handle themselves has been
helpful,” he said. “Watching what they do
and how they do it. They always answer any questions I have;
I’m in a great situation.”
Speaking of good situations, Scott’s recruiting is becoming
just that. EJ, who has a 3.14 GPA, has been hearing from many
schools including Maryland, Wake Forest, Boston College, Pitt,
Virginia, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, NC State, Northwestern, Oregon,
Rutgers, FSU and Nebraska.
“Since September the recruiting has really picked
up. I am getting lots of mail. I hear the most from
Wake, BC and Pitt,” he said. He has started
engaging with coaches as well. “I have been to some
campuses and some coaches have come to the school. I have
talked with Coach Day from BC and Coach Bossard from Pitt. I
have also talked with Coach Lambert from Wake Forest and Coach
Poindexter from Virginia.”
What about home state school Maryland? “I really
like Maryland a lot. I have been on campus a few
times. I like the school and the facilities. I have
talked with Coach Franklin and Coach Cosh and I really like
them.”
As the season winds down there is no doubt EJ Scott’s
recruiting will be ramping up. EJ says that can wait.
“I am looking forward to the rest of the season and trying to
stay undefeated. Once we finish the season whatever happens
in recruiting happens. I’m not going to worry about
it now.”
Keeping his focus as he does good things will continue to happen for
EJ. Expect him to be one of the state’s top
prospects for 2010.
