Florida RB Mitchell Hester Discusses Future

Terps hope family ties with Hester give them a leg up in the end.

Running back Mitchell Hester, a 5-foot-10, 190-pound running back out of Neptune Beach, Fl., has his phone vibrating from schools all over the country.

Hester has offers from 11 Division-1 schools, including Maryland, which he said is a school of very high interest for him.

“During the football season we talked a lot, but not as much over the summer,” he said. “I haven’t really talked to many coaches this summer.”

Maryland could have somewhat of a leg up on other contenders, as his family has some roots there.

“I’m liking the area because my mom is from there,” he said, adding when picking a school he is primarily assessing “education, location, and atmosphere.”

The highly recruited back said he would like to make a decision before the end of the football season.

“If I feel comfortable with a team, I’ll know before the last couple games of the season,” he said. “I’ve been talking with my family, friends and coaches.”

With so much interest from top-level programs like Maryland, Arkansas and Illinois, Hester said he’s looking for the opportunity to play as a freshman and does not plan on red-shirting.

He added Maryland is one of the schools selling him the possibility of playing right out of the gate.

“They said if I go out there and compete, I’ll have a chance to play right away,” Hester said.

As a junior, he ran for 1,850 yards, but is looking to come up with even bigger numbers in his senior year at Duncan U. Fletcher High School.

“This year, I want over 2,000,” he said. “I’m a clutch player. In big-time games, I make big-time plays.”

With a 4.33-second 40-yard dash time and his huge high school success, look out for Hester as early as the fall of 2011, but this time in a college uniform: maybe a Terps uniform.
