“It surprised me. I haven't been hearing that much from them,” he said. “I've only been receiving letters recently. I haven't talked to the coaches. I think I'll start hearing from them a lot more now.”
Despite early reports that home state Georgia was the favorite, Witchett, who measures at 6'1” 185 pounds, said his recruitment was open. “I don't have a list now. I'm open to everybody. So far I've been hearing from Maryland, Tennessee, Alabama, Illinois, Auburn, Ole Miss, and Georgia.”
Maryland was the first ACC school and fifth overall to make an offer to Witchett, but more are sure to roll in after he posted an impressive 40-yard dash time at the Scout Showcase in January, running it in 4.43 seconds. He also had a very strong showing at the National Underclassmen Combine in Atlanta. The other schools that have offered are Georgia, West Virginia, Toledo, and Minnesota.
What Witchett is looking for in a school comes down to the gridiron. “I want to make sure I fit into their system. It's important to get along with the coaches. I want to be able to get on the field as soon as I can.”
Witchett plans on eventually visiting Maryland to get a sense of the campus. “I'm going to try to get up there. I'm pretty sure I'm going to come up for an official visit now that they've offered me.”
