WR/S Ronny Vandyke (South County Secondary School, Lorton, Va.) sat out most of the 2009 season due to a dislocated shoulder. However, that didn't mean schools lost interest; it was actually quite the opposite.
Vandyke has recently added offers from Virginia, West Virginia, Rutgers, Vanderbilt and Pittsburgh to his list, which also includes Virginia Tech, Boston College, Syracuse and Maryland.
Despite his glut of choices, Vandyke remains keenly interested in the Terps, and he has been for a while.
Vandyke said, On a scale of 1-10 I'd say [my interest is] about an 8. They're close by and they've always been close to the top.
Ralph Friedgen and the rest of the coaching staff love the 6'3, 190-pounder's work ethic and attitude.
I recently talked with Friedgen, said Vandyke. He was talking about how he and the coaching staff are really interested in me getting down there and how I'm dedicated to the football team and improving as a student.
After the Terps' historically bad season in 2009, Vandyke said his interest hasn't waned, and he knows that the team's struggles were mostly due to a lack of reps.
I knew they had a lot of young players, he said. It was a young team, they needed more experience, and in a couple of years they should be pretty good. It just takes time when you're a young team.
Vandyke said his coaches have compared him to Virginia Tech safety Kam Chancellor in his style of play - high praise considering the big-hitting senior is NFL-bound this spring.
Vandyke knows that his best attribute as a football player and as a person is his work ethic but he also feels he has work to do to improve his on-field performance.
My biggest strength is my work ethic off the field, he said. After we're done doing sets of lifting, I'll stay and lift even more. My weakness is probably getting low and getting leverage.
Ultimately, Vandyke said his choice in school will come down to the campus atmosphere. His academic interest could also make Maryland more appealing.
When I get to campus, (I'm looking at) how the people are and how they treat me: school pride and everything, he said. Right now I've been looking at mechanical engineering or communications and broadcasting.
