Lady Terps vs New Hampshire- Game Recap

TSR was on hand last night to watch the Lady Terps dismantle New Hampshire 88-39.

After trouncing North Carolina Central 88-39 in their season opener, Maryland Terrapins Women's Basketball team was looking to continue their success against a visiting New Hampshire Wildcat team.

The Wildcats, however, made it clear to the Terps that they were not going to go down without a fight.

While both offenses struggled to get going early, Maryland soon started to heat up, jumping out to a 12-0 lead while holding the Wildcats until nearly the 15-minute mark in the first half. New Hampshire responded though, finishing out the rest of the half on a 20-14 run to shrink Maryland's lead to 26-20 at the half.

“There was a lot of adversity in the first half, and we didn't handle it well with our body language,” said Maryland head coach Brenda Frese, “I addressed that to our coaching staff at halftime, and that's what I love about coaching this team; we challenged them and they responded to the challenge.”

After halftime, however, Maryland began to pull away. Lead by strong second half efforts by Diandra Tchatouang and Lynetta Kizer, the Terps outscored New Hampshire by 14 points in the second half en route to a 63-43 victory.

“It wasn't pretty statistically, but most proud of overcoming the adversity not being able to buy basket in the first half,” said Frese, “We were able to rely on defense and offensive rebounding in second half and grind out a win. I was happy that we could respond like that in second half.”

Maryland finished the game with three players in double figures; Tchatouang lead the way with 17 points, while Kizer had 11 and Dara Taylor had 10. Tianna Hawkins came down with 15 rebounds for the Terps, and Taylor lead the team with 5 assists. Kizer also had 6 steals on the game.

For New Hampshire, Amy Simpson was the only player in double figures, leading the team with 11 points and 7 assists. Denise Beliveau lead the team with 5 rebounds.

The big problems for both sides were turnovers and field-goal percentage. Maryland's defense got New Hampshire to turn the ball over 21 times, but the Terps were not far behind with 14 turnovers of their own. As for field-goal percentage, both teams struggling mightily, with neither team shooting over 30% for the game.

In the end though, the Terrapins were able to add to their school record, winning their 38th-straight game in the Comcast Center, bringing their record to 2-0 on the young season. Their next game will be played on Thursday, November 19 at home against Old Dominion.
