If they've had any luck lately, it's been all bad, but on Sunday the Seattle Seahawks managed to create some of their own good luck by hauling in five interceptions en route to a 32-20 comeback win over the Detroit Lions in front of a raucous Qwest Field crowd.
Detroit got off to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter, using two Seattle turnovers to net 14 of those points, but QB
Matt Hasselbeck
, enjoying his best game of the season rallied his team for the come from behind win.
Lions QB Matt Stafford got off to a fast start, hitting six of his first nine passes including a seven-yard touchdown to TE
Brandon Pettigrew
after Hasselbeck's first pass was intercepted by S
Louis Delmas
at the Seattle 31 and returned to the Seahawks two.
On Seattle's next offensive play, Hasselbeck hit FB
Justin Griffith
for a 10-yard gain before he fumbled and three plays later Stafford hit WR
Bryant Johnson
for a 29 yard touchdown pass over Seattle CB
Ken Lucas
Seattle then struggled again on offense, this time failing on fourth-and-one from their own 38 allowing the Lions to score seven plays later when K
Jason Hanson
hit from 41 yards out.
That's when Seattle began their rally.
Hasselbeck hit next 16 passes in a row, resulting in 13 points -- a three-yard
Julius Jones
touchdown run and two
Olindo Mare
field goals -- sending the teams into the locker room with Detroit leading 17-13.
Seattle kept chipping away at Detroit's lead on their second possession when Mare hit his third field goal on the day, a 24-yarder, drawing them to within one point at 17-16.
Seattle got two interceptions in the first half -- one each by LB
David Hawthorne
and S
Deon Grant
-- and in the second half they got three more to set up 10 points including the game clinching touchdown when CB
Josh Wilson
stepped in front of Stafford's throw as Detroit was trying to drive for the winning touchdown with 40 seconds left on the clock. The fourth-year corner returned it 47 yards to the endzone, giving the Seahawks the 32-20 win.
Stafford finished the day 22 of 42 for 203 yards with the two touchdowns and five interceptions, while Hasselbeck completed 39 of 51 for 329 yards with a two-yard touchdown pass to WR
T.J. Houshmandzadeh
and the early interception.
Jones had only 36 yards on 16 carries, but did manage to get the one touchdown in the second quarter, but also netted six receptions for 78 yards as well.
On defense, Hawthorne continued to fill in nicely for the injured
Lofa Tatupu
, notching nine tackles to lead the team while fellow LB
Leroy Hill
added seven more and S
Jordan Babineaux
had five tackles and a sack and DE
Patrick Kerney
posted three tackles and a sack as well.
Detroit's
Ko Simpson
matched Hawthorne's tackle total with nine for the Lions while CB
William James
also added nine and former Seahawks CB Kevin Hobbs notched seven stops against his old team.
Seattle, now 3-5, will head back on the road for a brutal three-game road trip that starts next week in Arizona as they take on the 5-3 Cardinals.
