Northern Va. QB Picks Up Maryland Offer

Bryn Renner

West Springfield (Va.) quarterback Bryn Renner has the prototypical size, at 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds, and mobility for a college quarterback. He also has an excellent pedigree, as his father Bill Renner is a longtime, successful high school coach and former NFL punter. Renner made the short trip around the Beltway for Maryland's junior day last weekend and had a very productive day.

He met with head coach Ralph Friedgen and assistant James Franklin, toured the facilities and received a scholarship offer.

"I think they're good. I know they've got a good program," he said. "They said they like me because I'm a quarterback who can throw and also run and make plays, and that's what they like."

Renner currently holds offers from Maryland, UNC, Wake Forest, WVU, Michigan State and Virginia Tech. Last year he completed 214 of 339 passes for 2749 yards and 32 touchdowns to only seven interceptions. He also carried the ball 124 times for 598 yards and 10 touchdowns.

"I think going to a school that passes a lot would be a good thing, but I think I can fit into pretty much any system," he said.

His father, meantime, is quite familiar with the Terps' staff.

"He's know coach Friedgen for a while and knows some of the other coaches on the staff," Renner said. "He definitely likes and respects coach Friedgen."

Renner said his decision will be based on where he feels most comfortable.

"I want to be around good people because it's a four-year commitment, so you're going to have to like the people you're around."

He chatted for a while with Terps quarterback Chris Turner and left College Park with a good impression on offensive coordinator Franklin as well.

"I think I'm going to go back soon and meet with him. He seemed like a really good guy," Renner said.

Renner visited UNC a few weeks ago and will be making another trip to Chapel Hill next Wednesday to watch practice. It's safe to say he's quite interested in the Tar Heels, but he's also nowhere near being ready to make any decisions, he said.
