Friendly (Md.) Linebacker Edet Chooses Terps
"That was big because my mother and my family and friends can drive three hours to see me play. I get to stay on the East Coast," said Edet, who lives with his aunt in Fort Washington.
"Coach Franklin is a real, real, real cool guy, great guy. They welcomed me with open arms … He told me I'm not going to redshirt. I'm going to go in there and compete as a freshman," he said.
Edet is a 6-foot-2, 235-pound pound senior who also had offers from Michigan State, North Carolina and Pittsburgh. He's been under the national radar to some extent because he missed some playing time and relocated, but the Staten Island (NY) native quickly made a name as one of the top defensive players in the Washington area
In seven games this season, he recorded 110 tackles, 5.5 sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He runs a 4.6-second 40-yard dash and is a big-time hitter.
"I'm a sideline-to-sideline player, aggressive player with a physical mentality," he said.
Edet would have received more major attention, but his grades needed improvement. He said he's well on his way to qualifying, though. He took the SAT this weekend, and those results could go a long way in determining his future.
"I'm real, real close, so everything's going to work out," he said.
He enjoyed being hosted on his visit by a Terps player – Josh Portis – who is overcoming a few setbacks himself.
"He's a great player. He's going to do real big things, so watch out for him in the NFL Draft [in a few years]," Edet said. "He's been through some adversity like I have."
Edet's commitment could also help the Terps mend fences with the talent-laden Friendly program, which will undoubtedly continue to produce Division I players in bulk in the years to come. For more on that, stay tuned to TSR…
