Terps Strong with Shannon

Chris Shannon

Phillips Academy (Mass.) offensive lineman Chris Shannon maintains he does not have a clear-cut favorite choice of where he'll play in college, but judging by the fact he chose Maryland for his only weekend visit in the foreseeable future --and by his glowing comments afterwards -- it's safe to say the Terps are in good shape with the 6-foot-6, 295-pound senior.

"It was a great game," said Shannon, a versatile lineman and excellent student. "I had already seen a lot of the facilities and stuff like that, but I think the best part was getting to meet a lot of the guys and see how the team plays."

Shannon, at this point, holds two offers -- Maryland and Duke. But he's receiving heavy interest from a bevy of programs and is sure to receive more offers as the season goes on, which would explain why it would stand to reason that the Maryland staff is hoping to wrap up commitment from him.

Shannon is being monitored by Michigan, Notre Dame, Northwestern, Penn State, Stanford and Virginia, all of whom are waiting to see some senior-year film on him before finalizing offers.

"That's basically why I can't be worried about planning other visits because I don't know what's going to happen with the offers," he said.

Maryland, meantime, was the first school to offer him a scholarship. He said he had a blast watching the Terps beat William & Mary.

"The number of fans that actually turned out -- it was raining and it wasn't really a big-time opponents -- I've got to give them a lot of credit. It was really loud," Shannon said.

"The part of the endzone we were sitting in, they had a cannon that would go off every time they scored, and that was a great experience."

Shannon said Maryland is recruiting him as a tackle, but he's been working hard on improving his versatility and could see himself playing anywhere on the line. He said he's unsure when he'll pare his list or make his final decision because he wants to see which schools are serious about recruiting him.

"I think it's better to have a bigger list right now," he said. "I'm not really concerned with setting a timetable."
