Maryland takes on Co-Big Ten Champions Wisconsin

Posted Mar 18, 2002

Number 1 seeded Maryland will likely face a tough test Sunday afternoon when it faces No. 8 Wisconsin in the second round of the East Region.

The Terrapins (27-4) were sent to Washington, D.C. after winning the ACC regular season while Wisconsin got to Washington after clinching a share with four other teams in the Big Ten regular season.

On their games on Friday, Maryland avoided being the first team to lose to a 16-seed as they beat Siena rather easily 85-70 Friday night. Before Maryland's game, the Wisconsin Badgers faced St. Johns and walked away with a 10 point, 80-70 victory over the Red Storm.

The Terrapins look to advance to the Sweet 16 for the second straight time on Sunday and try to avenge a loss to Wisconsin last season, when they eventually made it to the Final Four.

Steve Blake had 11 points and 11 assists and Juan Dixon had 29 points as he moved within 7 points of the all-time record at Maryland, in their win last night.

Lonny Baxter added 14 points and 9 rebounds, and Drew Nicholas added 9 points from the bench for the Terps.

In Wisconsin's victory, Kirk Penney had 19 points, Freddie Owens 18, and Devin Harris 14. The Badgers shot 60% from beyond the arch and 48% overall from the field. Wisconsin's 12-0 run at the end of the first half put them up by 10 at halftime and the Badgers never looked back.
