Terps Involved With Alabama Forward
"I've seen Danjel a number of times recently at some tournaments this Spring, and he's a man-child on the court," said the source. "He's a guy who can bring the ball up court, he can guard wings, and he can even guard a power forward. It's really hard to classify him...I guess I'd call him a point forward. You can run the offense through him. He just does so many things well."
Purifoy, 6-7, does have some things to work on, however.
"Danjel's not a great knockdown jumpshooter," said the scout. "But he's the type kid that even if you play off him, he's still quick enough, and strong enough, to get around you, and get into the lane. He's a finisher and someone who absorbs contact well. Now this spring he has been making his fair share of perimeter jumpers, but he's not known for being a pure shooter.
"I've seen Purifoy play a lot, and I think he's a pro. He's got the body , the athleticism, and has great basketball IQ. He's a top 25-50 prospect in my eyes, and he'll play in the League. It will just be a question of how much he improves that shot. But he can play professionally regardless because of the other parts of his game. He's a really talented kid."
There may be another issue of some concern, however.
"I don't think the academics are great right now," said the source. "I heard Danjel may be looking to transfer for his senior year, and that might be a good move. If he shores up the grades, someone's going to get an outstanding player. He seems like a great kid who just let the grades slide a bit. I've talked to him three different times in the past few months, and his list of schools keeps changing, but Maryland always seems to be the one constant school on these lists.
"From talking to him, it sure sounds like Maryland is his leader. So, we'll see where he winds up this fall and go from there. If Maryland really wants a multi-purpose forward, this kid's an awfully good one. He plays for the Atlanta XPress, and that's an Under Armour program. That certainly that won't hurt Maryland's chances."
We spoke briefly with Winfred Jordan, the director of Atlanta XPress, and he did confirm that Maryland was "definitely involved in Danjel's recruitment."
We'll just have to wait and see how, or if, this recruitment of Purifoy plays out. Obviously, the current recruitment of transfers could play a role, and it's known the Terps are making a strong push for forwards Esa Ahmad (Shaker Heights, Ohio) and Jordan Murphy (Brennan/San Antonio, Texas), both of whom are in solid academic shape. Still, you have to stay on a kid with this type of talent and upside.
