Alexandria (Va.) T.C. Williams defensive tackle Jeremiah Clarke
was high on the Terps after receiving an offer from Maryland
in March, but with a number of top BCS programs added into the mix Maryland could have some competition.
"It's been a big week," Clarke said. "I got offers from Tennessee
and Virginia Tech
, so that was pretty exciting."
The 6-foot-5, 276-pound Clarke said he grew up rooting for Virginia Tech and he talked about getting an offer from his childhood favorite.
"When I was a kid I was like ‘I want to go to VT and play football,' it has been my dream school since I was a little " Clarke said. "But you know once you get an offer from your dream school, you have to think about whether or not you still want it."
"Coach Foster is recruiting me down there and I have been talking to him for a while. He said its pretty much like an SEC school in the ACC conference," Clarke said. "They had a down year last year but they are looking for a couple big defensive tackles to fill in the gaps and they are going to come back hard the way they always have been."
Clarke also talked about reeling in his first SEC offer.
"It was a big offer because it was SEC and Tennessee isn't too far from home," Clarke said. "I have been talking to Coach Thigpen for a while."
While Clarke was excited about his first SEC offer, but that does not necessarily mean bad news for Maryland. Clarke holds the ACC and Big Ten in high regard.
"The SEC is big, but I like the ACC and Big Ten a lot because it is kind of closer and it is still a big stage."
After completing a whirlwind of visits, Clarke is happy to be back in the weight room and focused on working out.
"I started working out again after I made all my visits," Clarke said. " I am trying to get my upper body strength up and just work on my hands and explosive power."
Clarke said Pittsburgh
, Penn State
, Wake Forest
, Tennessee and Virginia Tech have all stopped by to see him workout and they are already noticing a difference in his physique.
"The coaches said I have gotten bigger and they just like the way I am moving," said Clarke. "I spoke to Coach Johnson he was excited he said he thought I had gotten a little bigger but I am still really mobile, that's kind of what all the coaches are saying."
"I didn't gain weight, I am 276 pounds, but its more muscle now," Clarke said. "I got my body fat tested for the first time, I was at 22-percent but I am trying to get it down to 15."
While Clarke is back in the weight room, he has scheduled a few more visits on tap.
" I am taking a visit to UNC this weekend and going to Miami
in two weeks," Clarke said. "I am working on one more to West Virginia
and maybe Wake Forest."
Originally Clarke said he would announce his decision on May 30, his mother birthday, but now he might be reconsidering.
"I think I might push it back some until I feel comfortable," Clarke said. "But it will still probably be right around that time, I am just not positive yet."
