The men's and women's basketball team made their season debut as the players and coaches were introduced in the various new Under Armour uniforms that the Terps will wear this season. The coaches were met with loud cheers as they were introduced, with students chanting “Tur-geon! Tur-geon!” as the mens' coach Mark Turgeon emerged on the stage.
The two teams also entertained the crowds by dancing to a medley of upbeat songs and scrimmage which was filled with many acrobatic dunks and little defense.
“This is about the players,” Turgeon said. “When I was their age, I enjoyed the spotlight and I think the women's team and our guys had a lot of fun.”
For the freshmen players and transfer athletes, this was a little taste of playing at home during the regular season. Freshmen players Shaquille Cleare, Jake Layman, Seth Allen and Charles Mitchell kept the crowds cheering with their dunks and alley-oop assists to one another during the scrimmage.
“It was awesome to be finally out in the lights with the fans all there,” Layman said. “It was an unbelievable experience for the first time. It was awesome.”
Other events including performances by Maryland's Gymkana troupe, the cheerleading squad, the dance team and a student dunk contest judged by former Maryland athletes Torrey Smith, LaQuan Williams, Walt Williams, Dave Neal and Juan Dixon.
The Maryland men's basketball team will open their season at home against Indiana University (Pa.) on November 2 in their exhibition game.
