Projected Position on Depth Chart: Backup defensive end
The rundown: Jefferson is a big defensive lineman who has a very physical style of play and has the ability to get past the offensive line to sack the quarterback. Jefferson signed with the Terps in 2011 but enrolled in the school in January 2012 and has four years of eligibility remaining. Jefferson was one of the top defensive ends in the nation coming out of high school and was ranked as the No. 47 defensive end in the nation by Scout.com in 2010. He was a second team all-state selection in his senior year and recorded 16 sacks that season.
Expectations for 2012: With injuries to the defensive line, Jefferson finds himself as the backup to All-American Joe Vellano to start the season. Jefferson will see minutes on the defensive line and will also be a contributor on special teams this season. While Jefferson will not be taking over Vellano's starting spot barring any injury, with Andre Monroe lost for the season and Keith Bowers and Isaiah Ross missing the first few games, if Jefferson performs well early in the season as a backup and on special teams, he could hold onto one of the backup end spots once Bowers and Ross are healthy enough to return.
