Scout's Take: Michael Williams

Scout's Take: Michael Williams

2011 prospect Michael Williams from DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) plays with speed and aggressiveness. The three-star defensive back went with his heart and committed to Maryland despite the coaching change.

Michael Williams has a lot to offer as a cornerback. He has decent height at 5'11" and will challenge the receiver for every ball. Williams has very good speed and closes on the ball well. He reacts well to the run and comes up fast and will lay a lick on the ball carrier. He is a very good open field tackler. In coverage, he can bump and run and plays the ball well in the air. Williams is aggressive and sometimes that gets him out of position and he will lose the receiver in his routes. His speed does help overcome mistakes because he can get himself back in the play. He plays with energy consistently.

Williams was part of a nationally ranked track team so he has speed and plenty of it. It is his speed combined with his physical aggressiveness that make him the player that he is now. He plays the run well which should keep him on the field in college.

Williams considered offers from Illinois, Buffalo and Ohio before committing to the Terps. Maryland was the first to offer Williams after an impressive summer camp showing in the summer before his junior season. Williams committed to Maryland in December despite the coaching changes saying it didn't matter because the school is what he is committing to not a coach. Williams's older brother Madieu had a stellar career at Maryland before continuing on to the NFL so Michael knows the University of Maryland well. Williams should make an impact on special teams early and could contend for playing time in the defensive secondary as early as his second year.
